During a governors’ meeting at the White House on Friday, President Donald Trump and the Democratic governor of Maine engaged in a heated argument. Governor Janet Mills told the Republican president, “We’ll see you in court,” because of his attempt to deny the state federal funds because of transgender athletes.
Trump informed the governor that he anticipated it and that she would lose her political career for defying his command. The U.S. Department of Education announced later on Friday that it was opening an inquiry into the Maine Department of Education on the inclusion of transgender athletes.
The altercation at the meeting followed a day of back-and-forth between Mills and Trump over his efforts to exclude transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports. Even politicians from different parties have always interacted politely at the White House, but the altercation in the State Dining Room was an uncommon exception.
The exchange took place during the president’s welcome speech to the nation’s governors at the White House. He had singled Mills out in talks to the Republican Governors Association the day before, and he sought her out in the room when he discussed an executive order he issued earlier this month on transgender sports.
Speaking to a gathering of Republican governors Thursday night, Trump threatened to provide comparable assistance. He stated that he would stop sponsorship since he “heard men are still playing in Maine.”
Therefore, we will not provide them with any government funds. “Not at all, until they tidy that up,” Trump declared.
Earlier this month, the Maine Principals’ Association, which oversees high school athletics in the state, said that it will keep permitting transgender female athletes to participate. According to Mike Burnham, executive director of the organisation, the organisation will abide by the Maine Human Rights Act, which forbids discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
